Kerala, often referred to as the cradle of traditional art forms, has nurtured a variety of Indian classical dance styles, each embodying centuries of heritage, devotion, and storytelling. Among these, Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kathakali stand out as symbols of grace and spiritual depth. This cultural richness continues to thrive today through the dedication of artists like Soumya Sukumaran.
Soumya Sukumaran is a Doordarshan-graded Mohiniyattam artist, a passionate performer, and a respected classical dance teacher with over 20 years of experience. Hailing from Kerala, she began her journey into the world of classical dance at a young age, and has since trained under renowned gurus including Kalamandalam Kavitha Krishnakumar and Sudhana Kumar of Kalakshetra.
She holds an MA in Bharatanatyam from Annai Malai University and has completed her diploma in Mohiniyattam from Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Her training also includes Kathakali and Kerala Nadanam, making her a well-rounded artist deeply rooted in tradition.
Through her performances, Soumya seeks to blend classical aesthetics with meaningful storytelling. Her production “Panchami”, based on the life of social reformer Ayyankali, stands as a powerful example of how classical dance can be a medium for social reflection and empowerment.
Today, she continues to inspire students across the globe—both online and offline—instilling discipline, devotion, and a deep love for Indian classical dance.
In Soumya Sukumaran, Kerala’s rich dance legacy finds not just a performer, but a torchbearer of tradition for the generations to come.
